C. Water (10 ml) was added after 10 min and the mixture was stirred for ftirther 10 min. The organic phase was separated, dried (MgS04) and solvent was removed in vacuo to obtain the crude product (334 mg 81%), which was further purified by preparative chromatography over silica gel with n-hexane / ethylacetate (3 1) as an eluent to obtain 223 mg (54%) of pure 2,2 -dihydroxy-3,3 -dimethoxy-5,5 -dimethyl biphenyl (377).
