Treatment of human serum albumin with 1.6 molar excess (based on 58 available amino groups) of 3-sulfosuccinimidyl-4-maleimidobutyrate in pH 7.5 phosphate solution provided the product as indicated by MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy. 

To a solution of methyl octa-4,6-dienate (6 g) dissolved in 10 ml methyl alcohol was added 3 ml hydrazine and the mixture stirred 24 hours at ambient temperature. The mixture was filtered and the product isolated as a colorless crystal.
