Bioinorganic aspects

Since 1960, a very large number of other synthetic macrocycles has been prepared and this has resulted in a great increase in interest in all aspects of the chemistry of macrocyclic systems. From about this time there has also been enhanced interest in the role of metal ions in biological systems and many such bioinorganic studies have involved complexes of both natural and synthetic macrocycles. Thus there has been an element of cross-fertilization between these two developing areas, viz ... [Pg.2]

The aim of this series is to provide authoritative reviews in the rapidly expanding area of bioinorganic chemistry. The series will present state of the art reviews covering the whole field of bioinorganic chemistry. As the subject is, by its very nature, interdiciplinary, the editors feel that there is a need for articles covering the many different aspects of the subject from medicinal chemistry to biophysical studies. Suggestions from readers regarding topics to be covered in subsequent volumes will be welcomed. [Pg.262]

One solution to such problems is provided by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations (11,53-57). These are still very expensive, but they include dynamical aspects and they are thus one of the most powerful tools to investigate bioinorganic systems if many conformations and unexpected events play a role. A necessary prerequisite will always be that inexpensive electronic structure methods such as DFT can be applied to the bioinorganic system of interest. [Pg.112]

The kinetic and reactivity aspects of the coordination chemistry of, inter alia, zinc1469 and cadmium, have featured in the past in many full and comprehensive reviews9-11,16-226 which also include an account of these aspects of their bioinorganic chemistry here we shall survey some recent studies in this area.1468o-h... [Pg.996]

In this introductory chapter, some general aspects of bioinorganic chemistry will be dealt with. In Chapter 2 a section of the periodic table of elements is presented, indicating the transition metals that are catalytically active in vivo. Table 1 lists several elements that are essential to life, together with some statistical information and a few comments about their biological role. The compilation is limited and restricted to some of the most important transition elements, the nonmetal Se, and the alkaline earth metals Ca and Mg. [Pg.2]

It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that, during recent years, the bioinorganic properties of aluminum coordination compounds have become the objects of detailed study their general aspect [354], metabolism and toxicology [355,356], complex formation with nucleozides of di- and triphosphates and nucleo-zide-bound proteins [357], and x-ray analysis of biologically important complexes... [Pg.361]
