Binomial system of nomenclature

Genus A taxon consisting of one or more species, the first name of an organism in the binomial system of nomenclature for example, Escherichia in Escherichia coli. 

Binomial nomenclature- System of having two names, genus and specific epithet, for each organism. 

The year 1958 was one of several plausible bicentenaries for Linnaeus (Koerner, 1999). The first editions of his pamphlets Systema Naturae (System of Nature, 1735 first edition) and Genera Plantarum (Genera of Plants, 1737), used the sexual system, but his use of this approach preceded these publications. Linnaeus first used trivial names for species in Species Plantarum (Species of Plants, 1753) and in the tenth edition of Systema Naturae (System of Nature, 1758). Use of the year 1758 probably is meant to celebrate the adoption of trivial names and the consistent use of binomial nomenclature. 

Binomial nomenclature The system of taxonomy developed by Linnaeus in which each organism is assigned a genus and specific epithet. 

Nomenclature Biologists who name newly discovered organisms use a system that is structured very much like the one used by chemists in naming compounds. The system used by biologists is called the Linnaean system of binomial nomenclature, after its creator, Carolus Linnaeus. Research this system in a biology textbook, and then note similarities and differences between the Linnaeus system and chemical nomenclature.
