SCRs are still being used in older equipment, but they are gradually being replaced by similar devices that work in both directions, + and -, to operate on both the top and the bottom of an ac sine wave. First of all, the PNPN trigger diode can be replaced by a "diac," which will work in either direction, + or -. Two alternative symbols are at the upper right of the Fig. 21.4, and it is sometimes called a bidirectional switch.

Unlike an SCR, which is unidirectional, a triac is a bidirectional thyristor switch and conducts in both directions. It can be considered as composed of two SCRs, connected back to back with a single gate, as shown in Figure 6.22(a). Since the thyristor now conducts in both directions there is no positive (anode) or negative (cathode) terminals.

Bidirectional pumping was achieved in a single pneumatic structure in a PMMA chip. A liquid drop can be switched from one channel to another [465]. 

This is the computer that formed the basis for the Cray XT3 supercomputer. Every node has a 2.4 GHz dual core AMD Opteron processor, and a direct network provides each node with a 6.4 GB/s bidirectional link to its own switch using AMD HyperTransport . The switches connect to their six neighbors with 7.8 GB/s bidirectional links. 

The two main types of ring are the unidirectional path switched ring (UPSR) and the bidirectional line switched ring (BLSR).

The NI PCI-6509 digital card with 96 bidirectional I/O lines enable user by dedicated GUI interface (Fig. 2) to control each pin in the boards front panel interface and consequently enable him to control each led, switch and button.
