Thieno[2,3-/]quinolin-6-yl)methylenemalonates (746) were cyclized by heating in polyphosphate at 110-130°C for 4-7 hr to give benzo-thieno[5,6,7- ylquinolizine-6-carboxylates (747) in 53-68% yields (88AP241). 

Syntheses of benzo[/]thieno[3,2-i7][l,4]thiazepin-9(10H)-one 323 (2001BMC1123) and thieno[3,4- 7]-[l,4]benzothiazepine 324 (Figure 5 (1999JHC659)) start from the corresponding open chain amino acids. 

Castle and co-workers <1996JHC119, 1996JHC185, 1997JHC1597, 1998JHC1441> used 3-chlorothieno [2,3-3]thiophene-2-carbonyl chloride 280 in the synthesis of the appropriate amides, which by oxidative photo-cyclization gave novel polycyclic heterocyclic ring systems thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f][l,10]phenanthroline 281, thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f]naphtho[2,iy ]quinoline 282 and thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f]naphtho[l,2-g]qui-noline 283, thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f]naphtho[l,2y ]quinoline 284, thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f]naphtho[l,2 7]-[l,2,4]triazolo[3,4- ]quinoline 286, thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f]naphtho[l,2-/]tetrazolo[l,5- ]quinoline 288, benzo[ ]thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f]quinoline 285, benzo /]thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f]quinoline 287, benzol/] thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-f]tetrazolo[l,5- ]quinoline 289, and benzo[/jthieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2.3-f][l,2,4]triazolo[4,3- ]-quinoline 290. 

The l-methylbenzo 7>]furo-, benzo[ ]thieno-, and benzo[ ]selenolo[3,2- ]pyrroles (75), (76), and (77) were prepared <83JHC49> and the influence of annelation and of the heteroatom upon reactivity was tested toward acetylation and lithiation <83JHC6l>. The l-methylbenzo[ ]furo[3,2- ]pyrrole (75) was acetylated at C-2. 

An investigation into the methylation of 37/-[l]benzothieno[2,3-J]-l,2,3-triazole (10) demonstrated that the combination of Me2S04 and the silver salt of (10) gives reasonable yields of 3-methyl-[l]benzothieno[2,3-. 

Indoloazocines are useful as central nervous system depressants409 and also have shown some melatonin activity 410 Benzo[,(/]thieno[3,2-c]azocines have been employed as antidepressants.411... 

The UV spectra of 3,6-dimethylthieno[3,2-Z)]thiophene, 3,6-dimethylselenolo [3,2-Z ]selenophene, their dimers, trimers and tetramers (96T471), 2,2,5,5-tetra-methylthieno[3,2-Z ]thiophene-3,6-dione (68TCA247, 77CB1421), and derivatives of benzo[ )]thieno[3,2-Z ]benzo[ )]thiophene 121 (80ZOR425) and compounds 300-305 (93JOC5209) were measured and analysed. 

Anilides and quinolones with nitrogen-bearing substituents and thieno-thiophene from benzo[ ]thiophenes and thieno[2,3-c]thiophenes have been prepared (14EJM267). Benzo[ ]thieno[2,3c]- and thieno[3, 2 4,5]thieno[2,3-c] quinolones were prepared by the reaction of photochemical dehydrogenation from corresponding anilides. The compounds were tested for anti-cancer activity as well as DNA-binding propensities topoisomerases inhibition.
