Benzene detoxication

The process destroys snch refractory chemicals as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) pen-tachlorophenol (PCP) polynnclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) benzene, tolnene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) creosote phenolics and pesticides. DETOX also destroys less refractory chemicals, such as unrefined and refined petroleum hydrocarbons. [Pg.498]

The mast cells contain granules which are thought to consist of heparin (170). The location of these cells around the capillaries and small blood vessels makes it possible for them to void their granular contents into the perivascular tissue juices, or almost directly into the blood stream. In addition to acting as an anticoagulant, heparin from the mast cells may possibly also be a source of glucuronic or sulfuric acid for detoxication, as indicated by the depletion of the granular substance of dermal mast cells after applications of the toxic compounds phenol, naphthalene and benzene (412). [Pg.21]
