Bimetal thermometer A thermometer that uses two dissimilar bars of metals (with different rates of linear thermal expansion) riveted together. A variation in temperature produces a bending moment on the bar, which is magnified by a lever to record temperature on a dial.

Some filled-bulb thermometers take account of the pressure increase in the capillary stream. This increase is due to the vapor-pressure rise of the liquid phase plus the rise due to the compression of the gas. A relatively high pressure may hence occur. Bending the capillary tube is sometimes used, and the tube straightens to a degree as the pressure rises. The amount of straightening can be calibrated with a pointer on a dial to measure the temperature. 

It may not always be possible to have the dial of this type facing the operator, which may create problems in reading the instrument or safety problems if the operator has to bend over equipment or a machine. An instrument which can be used to overcome these difficulties is the back plunger-type shown in Fig. 6.30. The readings can be seen easily by viewing above the instrument. The direction of the plunger movement restricts the range to about 3 mm.
