In January 1986, J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Mueller of the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory discovered high temperature superconductivity in a certain class of copper oxides U. Only a year later, superconducting transition temperatures in this class of materials had been pushed to almost 100 K (2-3), far beyond the previous record of 23 K that had remained unbroken since 1973, and well above the benchmark temperature 77 K of boiling liquid nitrogen. In addition to the scientific excitement of this extraordinary development, the possibilities for practical application of superconductivity clearly need to be re-examined, if only because of the vastly greater ease in cooling to 77 K compared to the liquid helium temperature range ( 4 K) used in all previous applications of superconductivity(4). [Pg.280]
