Basic imaging methods

The basic imaging methods of NMR are applicable primarily to imaging of liquids and soft matter, where lines are narrow and spectral dispersion is small compared to the frequency dispersion introduced by application of magnetic-field gradients. The primary incentive for development of these methods comes from applications in medicine and biology, where the dominant signal is most often from water [Andl, Call, Cerl, Kiml, Mori, Vial, Wehl,Weh2].

Tire appropriate imaging method of imaging colloids depends, of course, on a number of factors, principally perhaps the size and concentration of the particles concerned. The size imposes a basic constraint, so that, for example, visible light can only be used to image particles (at least in the far field ) with diameter >300 nm. Both the Hahn and the stimulated echo are basic elements of many imaging methods. Because the stimulated echo consists of three pulses and three time periods, a greater variety of imaging methods exists for the stimulated echo (cf. Section 6.2.5) [Burl].
