It is a particular pleasure for me to see so many here who have an association with the Department of Information Studies in Sheffield. There are current and former students or researchers, collaborators, and others who are simply good friends. Janet Ash, my first research student in 1965, is here, still involved in the field. Bill Town, George Adamson, David Bawden, Peter Willett, George Vladutz, and John Barnard are here, and so too are all the current members of our chemical information research group. Peter Willett and I are grateful to the conference organisers and to the committee of the Chemical Structure Association, in particular, for the award of studentships which enable all of these to participate this week. 

John Gross Barnard graduated in 1833 from the US Military Academy, West Point NY, and was posted then as second heutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers. He served on garrisons and fortifications, participating in the construction of coastal defences at Fort Columbus/Fort Jay, Fort Hamilton and Fort Wadsworth in New York City NY, New Orleans LA,...

In 1980, John Barnard at McLaren International created the world s first carbon fiber chassis Grand Prix winner, the McLaren MP4.

In 1952, at the University of Minnesota, American surgeons F. John Lewis and C. Walton LUlehei successfully performed the first open-heart surgery on a human patient After reducing the hody temperature of a five-year-old girl, they repaired a hole in her heart in a ten-minute operation. In 1967, the first whole-heart transplant was performed hy South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard. The patient, Louis Washkansky, died eighteen days later of pneumonia.
