Barium methacrylate dihydrate

Bowden, M. J. O Donnell, J. H. Radiation-induced solid-state polymerization of derivatives of methacrylic acid. IV. Electron spin resonance spectra of barium methacrylate dihydrate. /. Phys. Chem. 1968, 72,1577-1582. [Pg.619]

O Donnell et al. investigated y-ray initiated polymerization of a single crystal of barium methacrylate dihydrate at room temperature. When the crystalline monomer was irradiated at —196 °C, no polymer was produced. When the irradiated crystal was allowed to stand at 25 °C, the conversion after 670 hr was only about 3%, but at 50 °C, the conversion reached 58% after 16 hr, yielding an amorphous polymer. These findings suggest that the molecules should have a certain mobility, since for the polymerization in the crystal to occur the monomer must be transported to the growing chain by transposition or diffusion. [Pg.219]

Hydrogen- and deuterium-atom bombardment have been used to initiate the polymerization of barium methacrylate dihydrate. The process is said to be initiated by the diffusion of hydrogen atoms in solid-state barium methacrylate dihydrate. By this method, large amounts of polymer form very rapidly, unlike in polymerizations initiated by y-radiation [112]. y-Radiation has been used in the solid-state polymerization of potassium acrylate, calcium acrylate, barium acrylate, and uranyl acrylate [113]. [Pg.344]
