Barium acetate arsenate

In metallic form, barium is very reactive, reacting readily with water to release hydrogen. In aqueous solution it is present as an ion with a +2 charge. Barium acetate, chloride, hydroxide, and nitrate are water-soluble, whereas barium arsenate, chromate, duoride, oxalate, and sulfate are not. Most water-insoluble barium salts dissolve in dilute acids barium sulfate, however, requkes strong sulfuric acid. [Pg.475]

Barium Metarsenite, Ba(As02)3, may be obtained by warming barium chloride with a solution of ammonium arsenite to which acetic acid has been added until arsenious acid is on the point of precipitation. The precipitate is then dried at 100° C.2 It is a white powder, easily soluble in water, but it can also be obtained as a gelatinous mass 3 when a mixture of barium chloride and potassium metarsenite in solution is left to stand for a few hours. In 1981 a study was undertaken in Poland on 680 samples of rubber products used in food processing plants. In 35% of the samples migration of metals/ metalloids into 3% acetic acid was reported (14% of the samples contained lead, 2.6% arsenic and 3% barium). The known carcinogen phenyl-feeto-naphthylamine was found in 15.1% of the compounds, with amino type antioxidants being detected in 23% of the compounds in total.
