When retaining the hypothesis of a partially occupied band of n electrons occupying N energy levels, we encounter the problem of accessing the distribution of electrons in the different levels according to temperature. 

The probabihty f(E) of finding an electron with an energy level E is given by the Fermi-Dirac distribution function, which is written  

T represents the absolute temperature, while k is the Boltzmann constant 

The function brings into play the parameter Ep, which has the dimension of energy this is the Fermi energy.
