Force-Coil Analytical Balances. The most precise modern analytical balances use a "force coil," mounted in a magnetic field the current needed to counterbalance the weight placed is measured (electromagnetic force restoration balance) or an optical system measures displacement these can be sensitive to 1 part in 3 x 106. The quantity b has the dimension of a volume and is known as the excluded volume or the binary cluster integral. The mean force potential is a function of temperature (principally as a result of the soft interactions). Current balance — Historic instrument to measure currents by measuring the repulsive force between metal wire coils through which currents flow.
