With another writer, select a topic from the list in Exercise 2. One of you should do directed creation for the affirmative, the other for the negative. After both of you have completed your initial writing, each writer should take both sets of raw material and generate a balanced essay that examines both sides of the chosen issue. Discuss similarities and differences in your final essays. 

The balance you need to strike between formality and informality is simply the avoidance of one extreme or another. You are not writing to your best friend, nor are you writing an academic essay for a scholarly journal. Go back to the journal entries you wrote in Section One. These are written in the voice you want to use, with just the right level of formality. 

A thesis is the main idea of an essay, and is a response to a topic. In the previous example, the student narrowed her topic to my generation s beliefs about the balance between work and play. To come up with a thesis, she can restate that topic in the form of a question What are my generation s beliefs about the balance between work and play The answer to that question might be, My generation believes that life should be made up of equal parts of work and play. ... 

A good thesis statement strikes the right balance between too broad and too narrow. It needs to be focused enough to encompass just enough material to cover within the spatial confines of the essay, and narrow enough to include enough material that can be supported by evidence. 

Martin Gottfried began his career as a music critic for the Village Voice and then became the drama critic for The New York Post and Saturday Review. He has published eleven books, including All His Jazz The Life and Death of Bob Fosse (1990), Sondheim (1993), George Burns and the Hundred Year Dash (1996), and Balancing Act (2000), and is currently the drama critic for the New York Law Journal. This essay was first published in Newsweek in 1986. 

Using the information in the essay on fats and oils, draw the structure of the triacylglycerol (triglyceride) formed from oleic acid, linoleic acid, and stearic acid. Give a balanced equation and show how much hydrogen would be needed to reduce the triacylglycerol completely show the product.

For an indication of other matters and conclusions dealt with in the essay, the reader is referred to the Table of Contents. In its total effect the essay is designed to bring out the beautiful interdependence of structure and function in the heme proteins, and, in particular, the balance between the character of the heme, the character of the protein, and the nature of the heme-protein linkage, in determining the properties of the moleoule.
