Bag charges

Reilly (Ref 1) describes a gray mixt made by mixing 7 parts of meal powder with 100 parts of sulfur, and is mostly used for the manuf of fire balls (used in war). These consist of twill bags, charged with compressed gray mixture, which is filled into them with the aid of spirit they are fired by means of a composition fuse. Gray mixture mixed with antimony sulfide is used for torches. 

Washout. A water jet built into the chamber of a heavy gun, so that water can be squirted in to extinguish any smouldering residue from the bag charge before the breech is opened. Such residue is rarely met, but if, as is generally the case with coast and naval guns, someone is standing dose behind the breech with the next round s bag charge in his arms, it needs only one flash-back to kill everybody in the turret, and the draft... 

A washout is also worth its weight in gold in the event of a misfired bag charge this, too, could be smouldering and could explode violently as the breech is opened in order to remove it. But a squirt from the washout removes all danger ... 

In certain cases, such as in some US howitzers, two types of chges are provided, one for inner, the other for outer zones of fire. The cloth of die bags for the inner zone is dyed green, while that for the other zone white. Accordingly there are green bag charge and white bag charge... 

Other primers are detonated by electricity, heat, or friction. In larger ammunition, such as for cannon, tubular primers may include a supplementary low explosive and be used to fire bag charges. 

Fibres and fabrics which are impregnated with weakly nitrated nitrocellulose to hold pyrotechnics, bag charges, and explosives. 

Many programs find they can increase participation, with or without mandatory recycling, by charging a volume-based fee (often a per-bag charge) for garbage pickup but collecting recyclables for free.
