Although informative, the structural formula is time-consuming to draw. Therefore, chemists have devised ways to simplify the representation. Figure 16.3(b) is an abbreviated version, and the structure shown in Figure 16.3(c) is called the skeletal structure in which all the C and H letters are omitted. A carbon atom is assumed to be at each intersection of two lines (bond) and at the end of each line. Because every C atom forms four bonds, we can always deduce the number of H atoms bonded to any C atom. The element symbols for substituent atoms in the skeletal structure are always shown explicitly, such as in l-bromo-3-chlorobutane [C4H8BrCl] ... [Pg.806]

The orthorhombic system, which has a b c and a = /3 = 7=90°, has three mutually perpendicular axes of twofold symmetry (along the (100) directions) and three mutually perpendicular mirror planes as may be seen in Figure 4.10d. The Schoenflies symbol for this class is D h- The h indicates a mirror plane perpendicular to the n-fold axis as before. The existence of the other mirror planes is implied by the rotational symmetry. The complete H-M symbol is 2/ 2/m2/m indicating three mutually orthogonal mirror planes perpendicular to the rotational axes. The twofold rotational axes are implied by the existence of the three mirror planes. Sometimes this is abbreviated as 2/ototmi or to just mmm since the mirror planes also imply the rotational axes. [Pg.71]

The tetragonal system, a = b c and a = /3 = y = 90°, has one axis of fourfold symmetry in the [001] direction, two sets of orthogonal axes of twofold syrranetry in the (100) and (110) directions, a set of three orthogonal mirror planes as well as two other mirror planes, (110) and (llO) as shown in Figure 4.10e. The Schoenflies symbol for this class is using the same reasoning as for D2h, except in this case n = 4. The full H-M symbol is abbreviated to A/mmm, where the /mmm indicates a mirror plane normal to the fourfold axis and mirror planes parallel to it. [Pg.72]
