Use tongs or gloves to handle the solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) because contact with skin can cause severe frostbite. Crush the dry ice by wrapping larger pieces in a clean, dry towel and striking them with a mallet or a wooden block. Use the dry ice immediately atter crushing, to minimize contact with atmospheric moisture.
