Automated network pinch retrofit approach

In the final stage of optimization, the options selected are optimized in terms of the trade-off between capital investment and utility saved. During this optimization, the main structural features of a network remain the same, but exchanger heat loads are allowed to vary. In some cases, several different topologies can be obtained, and they are considered separately in the optimization stage. The details of mathematic formulations for the approach can be seen in the work of Zhu and Asante (1999). [Pg.182]

The rationale of the network pinch method is based on the effort and difficulty required for each assessment task. The effort for conducting a revamp study is demanding as it could involve weeks or up to months depending on the complexity of the process. During the revamp evaluation stage, not only itemized costs need to be determined, but effects on piping, pressure drops, and operation will be evaluated as well. To reduce the manpower effort, the network pinch method has been implemented into mathematical [Pg.182]
