Autocorrelation correlogram

Correlation of the code with itself (autocorrelation) yields only one correlation point in the time domain defined by the sequence and the unit code interval (see Figure 5c) and an otherwise clean baseline. Since the detector in our chromatogram just follows what the sample valve is doing, it also should be a pseudo random sequence and the cross-correlation of input and output is really an autocorrelation and thus yields the single pulse correlogram with an otherwise clean baseline.

The plot of autocorrelation ri versus lag I is called autocorrelation function or correlogram. Usually the autocorrelation for I = n/5 lags are computed. Confidence intervals on individual sample autocorrelations can be computed for hypothesis testing The approximate 95 % confidence interval for an individual rj based on the assumption that all sample autocorrelations are equal to zero is 2/i/n. 

In order to evaluate all possible autocorrelations, r(r) is plotted against the time lag t in a correlogram, also called an autocorrelation function. The autocorrelation function for the time series of sulfur concentrations in snow is given in Figure 3.22. The time lags T correspond here to monthly distances. 

If the obtained intensity curve is correlated with itself by a small time shift (r), curves for larger molecules resemble themselves over a longer period as small molecules. Plotting the similarity versus applied time shift results in an exponential decaying curve. This curve is called the correlogram (chart 1) and can be fitted by the autocorrelation function (1).
