Authority, performance-influencing factors

Some authors claim that liposaccharides can depress the content of TNF-a and increase the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, thus—via mediators—they can affect the immune system (Can et al. 2003). It has been demonstrated that the NF-p transcription factor, (highly sensitive to the redox potential in its environment), which regulates synthesis of many mediators—cytokines, associated with inflammatory condition and the phenomenon of adhesion of cells— becomes deregulated in old age. Defense functions in such cases (and primarily in arthritis and arthritis-related conditions) are said to be performed by antioxidants (including a-lipoic acid), which can modulate the activity of monocytes and inhibit changes caused by deregulating of the transcription factor NF-kB under the influence of redox conditions in elderly people (Lee and Hughes 2002). [Pg.56]

Currently there is an ongoing discussion within the scientific community on how the quality and relevance of nanotoxicology research papers can be improved [78]. Guidelines for authors and reviewers on minimal harmonized characterization requirements and a common nomenclature system will be implemented by several scientific journals in the future. However, until this has taken place, it is crucial to perform and provide an extensive chemical and physical characterization of the studied NMs, of their behaviour directly in the in vitro testing conditions, and of possible factors that can influence the assay results. [Pg.496]

D and 4,4 -dichlorobiphenyl, to investigate the effect of organic solvents on immunoassays [175]. The effect of different concentrations of methanol on the immunoreaction was investigated. It was demonstrated that hydrophobic-ity of the solvent was the important factor when determining the effect of the solvent the less soluble the solvent was in water the lower the influence it had on the immunointeraction. The authors also performed a real-time competitive assay in toluene. The first time an immunoaffinity interaction in pure solvent has been shown. The effect on affinity and kinetics were discussed. [Pg.274]
