In the early 1970s, the Ellendale pipes were discovered in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. 

Only the northernmost pan of Australia (Cape York, Kimberley and the Arnhem Land peninsula) falls in the belt of equatorial monsoons. It is characterized by Tropical Rain Forest, Afforested Savanna and Light Forest ecosystems on Ferrasols and Nitosols, at places, lateritized soils. The sonthern fringe of the continent, its southwestern and sonlheastem parts, and also the island of Tasmania fall in the subtropical zone in the belt of westerly cyclonic cnrrents of air masses. They experience winter in the Sonthern Hemisphere. A dry snmmer and winter rains impart the characteristics of a Mediterranean snbtropical climate and determine the appearance of Dry Forest and Brnsh ecosystems on different Cambisols.

In South Africa C. dura and C. globifera may give rise to the condition known as jaagsiekte in horses (18), while in Australia it has been shown that Kimberley horse disease is caused by C. retusa (37) or...

Litoria splendida is found in a reasonably small geographical area, in the northwestern parts of the Northern Territory, and in the north-eastern parts of Western Australia (Tyler and Davies, 1986 Tyler et ah, 1994). Specimens collected for these studies were obtained from the Kimberley region of Western Australia. 

Antigorite has been identified in rock art pigments from the Kimberley region of Western Australia by Fordei a/. (1994). 

Watchman et al. (2001) identified biotite as a component of crusts covering rock paintings at Carpenter s Gap (Southern Kimberley, Australia) along with kaolinite, albite (q.v), muscovite and other minor minerals. The Colour Index (1971) hsts naturally occurring micaceous potassium aluminium silicates as Pigment White 20/26 (Cl 77019).

The light bands ( mm thick) contain only 1% hematite. In other places in the area the rock is not banded but spotted As one moves farther south-west these spots become more mnnerous and coalesce.
