Aurum

Sanskrit Jval Anglo-Saxon gold L. aurum, gold) Known and highly valued from earliest times, gold is found in nature as the free metal and in tellurides it is very widely distributed and is almost always associated with quartz or pyrite. [Pg.142]

Many of the metals used by ancient man— coppei (cuprum, Cu), silver (argentum, Ag), gold (aurum, Au), tin (stannum, Sn), and lead (plumbum, Pb)—are in relatively short supply. Ancient man found deposits of the first three occurring as the elementary metals. These three may also be separated from their ores by relatively simple chemical processes. On the othei hand, aluminum and titanium, though abundant, are much more difficult to prepare from their ores. Fluorine is more abundant in the earth than chlorine but chlorine and its compounds are much more common—they are easier to prepare and easier to handle. However, as the best sources of the elements now common to us become depleted, we will have to turn to the elements that are now little used. [Pg.441]

This can be degraded by several mycobacteria including Mycobacterium aurum strain MOl (Combourieu et al. 1998), Mycobacterium strain RPl (Poupin et al. 1998), and Mycobacterium chelonae (Swain et al. 1991). The reaction is initiated by a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase that is also active against pyrrolidine and piperidine (Poupin et al. 1998). [Pg.64]

This has received widespread application, and a single example has been chosen as representative. The pathway for the degradation of morpholine by Mycobacterium aurum MOl sadMycobacterium strain RPl was examined using whole cells, and this confirmed its identity to the one that had been proposed earlier for M. chelonae (Combourieu et al. 1998 Poupin et al. 1998). [Pg.285]

The aerobic degradation of chloroethene (vinyl chloride) by Mycobacterium aurum strain LI proceeded by initial formation of an epoxide mediated by an alkene monooxygenase (Hartmans and de Bout 1992). This reaction has also been demonstrated to occur with Methylosinus trichosporium, even though subsequent reactions were purely chemical (Castro et al. 1992b). [Pg.365]

An internationally accepted chemical notation makes use of symbols to represent elements and compounds, and advises on naming chemical compounds. In this notation, the elements are represented by one or two letters, many of which are drawn from the elements Latin or Greek names. The number of atoms of an element in a molecule is represented by a subscript written after the symbol thus Au (the first two letters of aurum, the Latin name for gold) represents an atom of gold Cu (the first two letters of cuprum, the Latin name for copper), an atom of copper and C (the first letter of carbon), an atom of carbon O represents an atom of oxygen and 02, a molecule of oxygen. The symbols listed below provide examples of the presently accepted form of chemical notation ... [Pg.47]
