Attributes of dislocations

It is useful to review some of the various attributes of dislocations, especially those that complicate the behavior when compared to the simple pictures described earlier. 

The segment may still be able to move if it lies on a slip plane but it will be subjected to a different shear stress. 

As will be seen later, the use of obstacles such as particles is often used to strengthen ductile materials by impeding dislocation motion. 

The initial number of dislocations in a material is related to the way in which the material is produced, i.e, dislocations are usually grown into the structure 

The velocity v of dislocations is limited at high stress by the velocity of sound but at lower stresses it is often expressed as
