The introductory chapter is brief but provides an ample introduction to mass spectrometry and leaves one comfortable as he/she moves on to the historical and instrumentation chapters that follow. A few of the basic equations are given as part of the review of basic concepts. In these few pages Dr Becker clearly introduces the concepts of atomic mass units relative to carbon, isotopes and isotope abundance. Figures 1.1 and 1.2 go hand in hand in providing the reader with the three major parts of a mass spectrometer (source, ion separation, detection) and show various alternatives for each of these. The subtle use of color in these and subsequent figures adds an attractive benefit for the reader.

Use of Bayesian belief networks to predict software quality has been proposed previously. [Hall, May, et. al, 1992] working on the FASGEP project used BBNs to measure confidence in the level of integrity of software design process, based on prediction of fault numbers. Fenton in [Fenton, Neil, 1999] present a critique of existing defect prediction models such as Multivariate approach and size and conplexity metrics and also conclude that BBNs offer some attractive benefits conpared to the existing software metrics techniques. 

Relative to transition metal oxides, the most attractive benefits of organic HCL materials are their solution processibility and structural diversity. The chemical structures of some organic HCL materials are shown in Scheme 6.3. 

The N-heterocyclisation of amines with alcohols represents an attractive approach to the synthesis of cyclic amines. Ir and Ru catalysts have been successfully used to form pyrrolidines, piperidines, and tetra-hydroisoquinolines. More difficult to access are piperizines and 1,2,3,4-tet-rahydroquinoxalines which require higher catalysts loadings, extended reaction times, and higher temperatures. To date, no examples exist of a catalyst controlled asymmetric N-heterocyclisation with amines and diols to produce enantiomerically enriched N-heterocycles. Still, the preparation of N-heterocycles via hydrogen borrowing offers attractive benefits no prior activation of the alcohol is required, and the only stoichiometric by-product is usually water. 

Membrane contactor technology, due to its attractive benefits, is proved to potentially substitute conventional distillations and packed columns in the separation industry.
