The atom represents the smallest indivisible unit of matter, i.e., it cannot be broken down fnrther nnless exposed to an exorbitant amount of energy such as that seen in the snn s core, nnclear reactors, or particle accelerators. The word atom comes from the Greek word atomus, which means physically uncuttable. This concept is thought to have been first introduced by the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Democritus around 400 BCE. Sufficient evidence for this concept was not, however, introduced until the early 19th century (post-Socratic era) for which Dalton is primarily accredited. [Pg.23]
