Firstly, the problem of waste disposal was highlighted from the global perspective, paying attention to the role that it plays in the waste management in different parts of the world, and the effects of its deposition with particular emphasis on greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Furthermore, a separate chapter is devoted to the characteristics of the landfill gas. Its composition and properties, which determine the nature of the threats to the environment and potential ways to reduce its emissions, are described.
