Logic Aristotelian

In mechanistic reasoning, the most carefully conceived explanation may turn out to be a gross distortion of reality in spite of our perusal of supporting reference material and the rigorous application of Aristotelian logic. The reaction described in this problem is an example of such a situation. [Pg.109]

A formal classification theory for such terms, which are neither very exact nor very inexact, was introduced by Zadeh, who, among others, saw the need for generalizing the theory of sets to admit the possibility of unsharp boundaries between classes of imprecisely defined objects. Whereas the characteristic function can only have a value of 0 or 1 (in harmony with the Aristotelian logic of the excluded middle), membership in a fuzzy set is a matter of degree. This degree (or grade) of membership (ix) may have any value in the continuum of the real interval [0,1] in the special case where the value of /x is restricted to 0 or 1, the degree of membership becomes the characteristic function. [Pg.70]

Fuzzy logic is, thus, a generalization of Aristotelian logic, which include uncertainties or fuzziness in the decision making process. This uncertainty is concerned with a degree of truth associated with each person and with the level of knowledge of this person. This theory was initially developed by Zadeh (1965). [Pg.253]

Bacon, Sir Frands (1561-1626) A philosopher, statesman, author, and scientist bom in England, Bacon was a precocious youth who at the age of thirteen began attending Trinity College, Cambridge. Later a member of Parliament, a lawyer, and attorney general, he rejected Aristotelian logic and... [Pg.2001]
