Approved Platinum-Containing Compounds

Analogous reactions employing palladium have also been studied for polymer synthesis as well as monomer synthesis. Some of these materials are potential anticancer drugs since they show inhibition of certain cancer cell lines.  

Substitution reactions of Pd are similar to those of Pt with respect to the trans hgand, leaving group, entering ligand, and solvent effect. The kinetics are similar with both solvent- and ligand-based terms, except the solvent term is more important for the palladium complexes. 

Organometallic chemistry suffers from inconsistent naming of compounds. As in the case of organic chemistry, common names are often used and are more easily recognized than the official or lUPAC name.Thus, the central platinum compound, cw-diaminedichloroplatimun(II) is often found referred to as c/r-diamine-dichloro-platinum (II), m-diaminedichloroplatimun II, diaminedichloroplatinum II, and other variations on the same theme. Here, we will attempt to use the correct form. Further, cw-diaminedichloroplatinum(II) also has several common names such as cisplatin, CDDP, cm-DDP, and cisplatinum. Cisplatin is tiie most widely used of these names. Here, we will use both cisplatin and cw-DDP. 

The platinum compounds are also alternately referred to as platinum complexes, compounds, and conjugates. Here we will use all of these designations. 

Many authors choose to use a double m when referring to these diamine compounds, such as ci5 -diamminedichloroplatinum(II), but here we will use the single- m spelling.
