Appearance potential isotopic studies

The applications of mass MS are extensive and may be found in many spheres of scientific investigation. The range includes purely physical measurements such as appearance potentials, kinetic studies on ultra-short-lived ionic species, isotopic ratio measurements for dating or health studies, ion structure investigations, and a vast array of qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures employed in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, nuclear science, and semiconductor engineering. [Pg.2786]

It has been studied by IR spectroscopy (when trapped in a low-temperature matrix) and by mass spectrometric studies on the vapor. As mentioned earlier, the immunoassay can be done with a number of procedural modifications and in this instance one must substitute the isotope with another molecule (fluorescent dye, magnetic particle, enzyme) which can be measured and therefore serve as the source of tracer. Administration of about 1 mg of Zn would appear to be acceptable compromise in studies with adult subjects consuming about 15 mg/day of natural zinc. However, it might be necessary, or desirable, to enrich the diet or a test meal with a second isotope (, J). Since Zn cannot be measured by neutron activation, Zn is a potential candidate for this second tracer. However, the natural abundance of this isotope is high (18.6 atomic %) so that the feasibility of its application at physiological intake levels must first be established.
