There is considerable interest in the chemistry of triazines as some of these compounds show pronounced antimalarial, antimicrobial and antiviral activity (76JCS(Pl)252l). Therefore two types of thiophenes annelated with a triazine ring will be mentioned. Thieno[2,3-d]-1,2,3-triazines were synthesized by cyclization of diazotized 2-aminothiophene-3-carboxamides (equation 55) (73M1586). Treatment of 3-alkylthio-6-styryl-5-oxo-2,5-dihydro-l,2,4-triazines with phosphorus pentasulfide in pyridine yields thieno[2,3-e]-l,2,4-triazines (equation 56) (78CI(L)585). Probably a thiation with subsequent cycloaddition and elimination of a hydride ion is involved. 

About seven hundred polyacetylenes have been isolated so far mainly from plants belonging to the family of Asteraceae, Umbelliferae and Campanulaceae [11]. Polyacetylenes occur principally as straight chain polyines, allenes, phenyl, thiophenyl, thioether and spiroketal-enoether derivatives in a quite high yield. Thiophenes and related sulfur compounds are usually grouped together with die polyacetylenes because of their common biosynthetic pathways [11]. Few plant-derived lactones, butenolides and phospholipids show antiviral activity. The antiviral activities of thiophenes, polyacetylenes, lactones, butenolides and phospholipids from plant origin are reported in table 8. 

Some aminobenzoic acid diuretics containing the thiophen ring have also been studied. The syntheses and lipid-lowering properties of (203) and (204) have been described. 3-j8-(2-Thienyl-alanine-8-lysine)vasopressine has been synthesized by the solution technique. A comparison of the bioavailability of [2,5- C]thiophen after oral and rectal administration in mice has been reported. The nitro-reduction of carcinogenic 5-nitro-thiophens by rat-tissues has been studied. Thiophen-ring-containing compounds with antiradiation, antidepressant, antiparasitic, " antibacterial, - antiviral, and broncho-dilator activity have been studied.
