Antiricin antibody

Ricin is a highly immunogenic toxin, and paired acute and convalescent sera should be obtained from survivors for measurement of antibody response. Conceptually, the detection of circulating antiricin antibodies formed in response to sublethal toxin exposure is possible for exposed individuals who survive for 2-3 weeks (Hunt et al., 1918). However, humoral immunoglobin M responses would likely be of short duration, and no immunological memory would be anticipated without boosting. [Pg.445]

Moreover, treated animals developed significant antiricin antibody titers, suggesting that the... [Pg.449]

Animal studies have shown that either active immunization or passive prophylaxis or therapy (if the therapy is given within a few hours) is extremely effective against intravenous or intraperitoneal intoxication with ricin. On the other hand, inhalational exposure is best countered with active immunization or prophylactic administration of aerosolized specific antiricin antibody. Active prophylaxis through immunization is the only effective medical countermeasure within our grasp at this time. [Pg.638]

Antiricin antibodies and formalin treated toxoid immunization Mycotoxin... [Pg.10]

Continued investigation of antiricin antibodies as well as formalin-treated toxoid immunization is appropriate, but should be considered low priority for domestic preparedness due to the high cost of developing a licensed product, the limited potential of mass exposure to ricin, and the low probability of any potential means of developing a mass-exposure technique. [Pg.154]
