Antipsychotic drugs insomnia

Barbiturate overdose may be treated with gastric lavage and oral administration of activated charcoal. Supportive therapy of cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal function also should be provided. Coadministration of alcohol and barbiturates may increase the sedative effect of chloral hydrate. Long-term use of barbiturates leads to dependence. Sudden discontinuation of an antipsychotic drug may cause withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, rhinorrhea, sweating, insomnia, restlessness, and vertigo.151... 

Finally, of 192 patients who had remained symptomatically stable for at least 1 month with another major second-generation antipsychotic drug, olanzapine (mean age 38 years 63% men), 70% completed a 6-month study with injectable risperidone treatment-related adverse events were reported by 121 patients (63%), mostly anxiety (12%), exacerbation of disease (10%), insomnia (9%), depression (6%), and akathisia (5%) (231). 

First, two or three drug combinations lithiumP or valproate0 plus a benzodiazepine (lorazepam or clonazepam) for short-term adjunctive treatment of agitation or insomnia lorazepam is recommended for catatonia. If psychosis is present, initiate atypical antipsychotic in combination with above. 

High-potency benzodiazepines (e.g., clonazepam and lorazepam) are common alternatives to or in combination with antipsychotics for acute mania, agitation, anxiety, panic, and insomnia or in those who cannot take mood stabilizers. Lorazepam IM may be used for acute agitation. A relative contraindication for long-term benzodiazepines is a history of drug or alcohol abuse or dependency.
