Antimuscarinic agents contraindications

Buscopan is a branded preparation containing hyoscine butylbromide, an antimuscarinic agent that reduces gastrointestinal motility. Antimuscarinic agents are contraindicated in cases of angle-closure glaucoma as they may aggrevate the condition. Hyoscine butylbromide is a quaternary ammonium compound, unlike atropine, which is a tertiary ammonium compound. [Pg.128]

F. Contraindications The antimuscarinic agents should be used cautiously in infants because of the danger of hyperthermia. The drugs are relatively contraindicated in persons with glaucoma, especially the closed-angle form, and in men with prostatic hyperplasia. [Pg.71]

Carbocisteine is a mucolytic agent that may be used in chesty cough. Antihistamines tend to have antimuscarinic properties, resulting in urinary retention and are therefore contraindicated in prostatic hypertrophy. [Pg.257]

Kaolin/pectin is an antidiarrheal combination that absorbs fluid, and binds and removes digestive tract irritants. They are used for symptomatic treattnent of diarrhea. Kaopectate (190 mg kaolin/mL and 4.34 mg pectin/mL) is an antidiarrheal agent. By being absorbent, it recovers excess fluid in bowel dysfunction. It is contraindicated in obstructive bowel dysfunction. When used concomitantly, kaolin/pectin may impair absorption of the following drugs antidyski-netics, antimuscarinics (especially atropine), chloroquine. [Pg.372]
