Anti-drip agents

Flame retardant grades may not only use additives such as sodium 2,4,5-trichlorobenzene sulphonate but also an anti-dripping agent which can cause cross-linking as the polymer bums, thus reducing the tendency to drip. 

Flame retardants are often used in combination with anti-drip agents, which reduce the tendency of the material to form burning droplets in the event of fire (67). Fluorinated polyolefins are preferably used as anti-drip agents (22,67). 

As usual, certain additives can be added to the composition. Among others, the use of an anti-drip agent has been proposed, namely poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE)). The anti-drip agent may be encapsulated by a rigid copolymer, for example, SAN, which is known as teflon encapsualed in SAN (TSAN) (29).

Almost all FR-PBT blends contain an organo-halogen agent, an antimony synergist and a fluoropolymer anti-drip component. These three ingredients, as well as the overall fuel content of the blend, are balanced to formulate FR-PBT products. 

A continuous drip of a small amount of diesel oil (typically less than 1 ml/minute) into the oxidation tank solution aids in separation of sulfur into die froth, as well as producing a thick, easy to remove froth. Sometimes diesel oil addition leads to over-frothing, however, and silicone or ocenal must be added as anti-frothing agents.
