Principe, Aspiring Adept, 175—178. The details of Locke s involvement with chymical medicine are a contested issue. See J. C. Walmsley, Morbus Locke s Early Essay on Disease, Early Science and Medicine 5(2000), 367—393, and the subsequent exchange between Peter Anstey and Walmsley—Anstey, Robert Boyle and Locke s Morbus Entry A Reply to J. C. Walmsley, Early Science and Medicinel (2002), 358—377, and Walmsley, Morbus, Locke, and Boyle A Response to Peter Anstey, Early Science and Medicine 7(2002), 378—397. For Locke s links to the Baconian tradition, see Peter R. Anstey, Locke, Bacon, and Natural History, Early Science and Medicine 7 (2002), 65-92. [Pg.280]

I intentionally avoid the use of the terms primary qualities and secondary qualities here. As Peter Anstey points out in his recent study of Boyle s philosophy, these terms had a specific sense in scholastic natural philosophy that was quite different from Boyle s. In addition, Boyle himself employed the terms in ways that do not always correspond to the modem usage, which is descended from John Locke. See Anstey, The Philosophy of Robert Boyle (London Roudedge, 2000), pp. 21-30. [Pg.176]
