The administration of angiotensin II to an animal with intact baroreceptor reflexes results in reflex bradycardia in response to the marked vasoconstriction. When baroreceptor reflexes are depressed (barbiturate anesthesia) or if vagal tone is inhibited (atropine or vagotomy), angiotensin directly induces cardiac acceleration.

The inactin (lOOmg/kg, i.p. sodium ethyl-(1-methyl-propyl)-malonylthio-urea) anesthetized rats are treated with atropine (2.4mg/kg, s.c.), and their ganglions are blockaded with pentolinium (19.2mg/kg, s.c.). Overall, 10-mg/kg captopril is administered i.v. acutely to the rats in the captopril group, and it inhibits fully the pressor effect of 60-ng/kg angiotensin I. 

An other important factor to be considered is the mode of recording tissue response, mainly with preparations in which both di -rect and indirect actions are the rule. A good illustration of this fact is given by the action of atropine on the guinea-pig ileum response to angiotensin. If experiments with atropine are perfor -med recording mainly the indirect response, an important re due -tion shall be observed, but recording of the two responses shows that only indirect action is affected (14).
