Andersen Hans Christian

Oersted had a kindly and sympathetic personality. He had a successful marriage and a large family, hi 1819 he befriended a poor fourteeii-year-old boy who over the years became virtually another member of the Oersted family. The boy, Hans Christian Andersen, was to become the great Danish stoi"yteller. Andersen often referred to himself as little Hans Christian and to Oersted as gi eat Hans Christian. ... 

Think for a moment of children s fairy tales—the stories of the Brothers Grimm, of Hans Christian Andersen, of noses that grow long when lies are told, of children too innocent or naive not to follow a pied piper—and you have the driving force behind the hyperdrama. The fairy tale is a life lesson, a moral tale wherein the moral is the driving force for the telling of the story. A narrator or storyteller takes us through the cautionary tale. 

The behaviour of these betaine dyes may be compared to that of the Princess in Hans Christian Andersen s fairy-tale "The Princess and the Pea"(28). As one perhaps remember, that Princess was so sensitive to her surroundings, that she was able to feel a pea through 20 mattresses and 20 eider-down quilts in her bed. 

While it would be nice if the myths could be debunked, that is probably not going to happen. As is noted in the beginning of this chapter, we already know that the myths are wrong and that usually they are more a hindrance than a help. The way forward is rather to expose them, to look at them with fresh eyes and thereby realise, like the child in Hans Christian Andersen s tale about the Emperor s New Clothes, that there is nothing there. Since the myths are an integral part of Safety-1, it may be difficult to do so from the inside, so to speak. Adopting a Safety-11 perspective, not as a replacement of Safety-1 but as a complement to it, may make this a bit easier.
