We approached a completely new set of authors for the new project with the same philosophy in choosing actively researching experts, but also with the aim of providing an international perspective, so to reflect the diversity and interdisciplinarity of the now very broad area of inorganic materials chemistry. We are delighted with the calibre of authors who have agreed to write for us and we thank... [Pg.347]

SOCIAL RELEVANCE AND INTERDISCIPLINARITY IN CANADIAN ENGINEERING EDUCATION PERCEPTIONS OF FEMALE AND MALE STUDENTS"... [Pg.255]

In this paper we have been able to address the central themes of titis conference, social relevance and interdisciplinarity in engineering education. Our first hypothesis - that exposure to the societal implications of engineering is more appealing to women - is confirmed by our results. If we consider only student perceptions, as we do in this paper, there is not support for the second hypothesis - that increased integration of humanities and social science subjects will make the curriculum more socially relevant. Rather, the students perceptions of interdisciplinarity remained very STEM focused despite the fact that our on-going research indicates that administrators in engineering share overall a vision of interdisciplinarity which extends to the humanities and social sciences. [Pg.264]

Overall we have demonstrated the pertinence of considering both sex and year of study when examining Canadian students perceptions about social relevance and interdisciplinarity. Our approach has allowed us to depict both similarities and differences between male and female students, along with the changes in their perceptions that seem to have occurred over the course of their studies. [Pg.264]

The present results represent qualitative data as well as small samples. They can be interpreted in an explorative way and as to generating hypotheses, however, they must not to the present time be generalized. For this paper s focus pursued the question of the motivating factor interdisciplinarity . We have embedded it to a broad understanding of gender-justice. Thereby, we refer to the dimensions of corporate eulture, strueturc and communication and apply criteria such as relatedness to context, sustainability, social competence and interdisciplinarity in the narrow sense (Jansen-Sehulz/Dudeck 2006). [Pg.321]
