Anchor properties

Chigrinov V, Muravski A, Kwok HS. 2003. Anchoring properties of photoaligned azo dye materials. Phys Rev E 68 061702 061705. [Pg.85]

The aim of these studies is to understand and control the electrical properties of surfaces on a micrometric scale, that might be extremely useful for the application of these materials in the field of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. In fact, it is well known that the LC anchoring properties depend not only on the substrate morphology but also on its electrical properties [68]. The electric polarization in nematic and other non-polar liquid crystals has essentially three origins flexoelectricity [65], orderelectricity [66,67] (related to the gradient in the order parameter) and the polarization of the substrate... [Pg.104]

Experimental evidence of the biaxial structure is rather limited since its existence is very delicately tuned by the anchoring properties of the confining substrates and since it is only realized in a very narrow temperature interval. Here we present results obtained by computer simulations which mimic the microscopic behavior of the system. [Pg.123]

Rankenberg et al studied the membrane-spanning GWALP23 peptide distribution in DOPC, DMPC and DLPC bilayers of different thicknesses. Gleason et al exchanged the tryptophan residue for tyrosine in GW ALP peptides to study the membrane anchor properties of these residues. [Pg.390]

Prom past theoretical studies, it is known that defect structures that arise in the proximity of an interface [16], as well as the nature of their interactions [17], depend on the anchoring properties of the liquid crystal. [Pg.231]

Experimentally, the orientation and strength of anchoring at various interfaces depend on the system under study. As an instance, it is possible to control the anchoring properties at the surface of water droplets immersed in a liquid crystal through the use of amphiphilic molecules adsorbed at the droplet interface [15]. For the case of solid surfaces, the anchoring properties can be controlled using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols or other compounds [1]. [Pg.231]

In molecular simulations, the anchoring properties are determined directly through the choice of interaction potentials. For the Gay-Berne fiuid, Andrienko et al. have shown that a colloidal particle immersed in the bulk nematic phase exhibits strong homeotropic anchoring (i.e. the... [Pg.231]
