Amundson report

Shortly after the publication of the Amundson Report on the future of chemical engineering in 1989, Edward Cussler and 1 discussed the need for a book on products. Subsequently, he became the pioneer and coauthored the first modern book in product design. Neither of us has ever designed a product that became a winner in the marketplace. It is customary in our profession that those who write design books have never designed a chemical plant or an oil refinery, but those who have done so do not write. 1 am indebted to many friends who have participated in the design of successful... [Pg.370]

Minnesota enrolled in. The second episode was a few years ago, when I was helping steer the studies of research needs and opportunities for the National Research Council Report on Frontiers of Chemical Engineering— the Amundson Report. The third was intermittent reading and reflection in preparation for the speech at the Centennial Convocation of Chemical Engineering education that is elaborated here. [Pg.4]

Against this background, the modern era has been a time of careful reflection about the future of the discipline of chemical engineering. In the USA, the National Research Council published in 1987 its report Survey of Chemical Engineering Research Frontiers and Opportunities [50], Recognising the underlying trends in the process industries (see Table 2), the so-called Amundson report (named after the chairman of the committee) represents a call to the discipline to realise its potential... [Pg.36]

The research frontiers identified in the Amundson report (see Table 3), confirmed by other contemporary studies (e.g. from the Chemical Industries Association in the UK, and from the AIChE [50]), serve to emphasise the broad scope of chemical engineering, and set a research agenda for the discipline which will keep us occupied for some time to come ... [Pg.37]

This book takes as its basis the vision of chemical engineering transformed, as expressed in the Amundson report of 1989, in which areas new to the traditional subject matter of the discipline are explored. These new areas include biotechnology and biomedicine, electronic materials and polymers, the environment, and computer-aided process engineering, and encompass what has been labeled the BIN—Bio, Info, Nano—revolution. The book addresses these issues in a novel and imaginative way and at a level that makes it suitable for undergraduate courses in chemical engineering. [Pg.8]

The report of the committee on Chemical Engineering Frontiers Research Needs and Opportunities [13], known as the Amundson report, outlines beautifully the picture of chemical engineering in the next decades. The report is quite optimistic about the future of the profession, and the authors of this book strongly share this optimism. Chemical engineering played an important part in human development in the last few decades and it is expected to play an even larger role in the future. [Pg.53]

The classical problem of multiple solutions and undamped oscillations occurring in a continuous stirred-tank reactor, dealt with in the papers by Aris and Amundson (39), involved a single homogeneous exothermic reaction. Their theoretical analysis was extended in a number of subsequent theoretical papers (40, 41, 42). The present paragraph does not intend to report the theoretical work on multiplicity and oscillatory activity developed from analysis of governing equations, for a detailed review the reader is referred to the excellent text by Schmitz (3). To understand the problem of oscillations and multiplicity in a continuous stirred-tank reactor the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of these phenomena will be presented. For a detailed development of these conditions the papers by Aris and Amundson (39) and others (40) should be consulted. [Pg.74]

Salnikov specifically reported multiple singular points and a limit cycle establishing the existence of oscillations in chemical reactions. Bilous and Amundson (1955) referred to Salnikov s (1948) paper as the first work where periodic phenomenon in reaction systems was discussed. They also indicated that a reaction A -> B in CSTR is irreversible, exothermic, and kinetically first order. Considering mass balance and heat balance equations it is known that at the steady states, the heat consumption... [Pg.17]

Since the paper of Bilous and Amundson in 19SS, it has been a straightforward matter to determine the stability of the steady states via these two relationships. Although the paper " also included phase-plane concentration-temperature plots, the first really extensive numerical calculations were first reported by Aris and Amundson. These results promoted many further theoretical and numerical studies of CSTR, both to elucidate the variety of phenomena which can... [Pg.377]

Stochastic modeling of numerous chemical process systems has been reported. Stochastic modeling for fluidized beds has been studied by Ligon and Amundson [3 0,31] and by Fox and Fan [32]. Stochastic models of mixing and chemical reactions have been discussed by Nauman... [Pg.552]
