The second method involves the reaction of benzophenone with sodium cyanide in the presence of ammonium carbonate, followed by the simultaneous cyclization of the resulting product (carboxyaminoninile) and its rearrangement under the reaction conditions to form phenytoin [2]. 

Benzophenone reacts with ammonium carbonate in the presence of KCN and ethanol (60%) to give rise to the formation of one mole of phenytoin by ring closure (imidazoline) and with the elimination of ammonia and nascent oxygen.
