The aim of this review is to survey the chemistry and, in particular, the use in heterocyclic synthesis of aminomethylenemalonates (1) and their cyclic esters (2), where R1 and R2 or R2 and R3 may likewise form a ring. Some early reviews in this field merely touched on certain aspects of the chemistry of aminomethylenemalonates and did not treat the subject systematically (48CRV43).
