Amino acids astragalus

This particular amino acid (HOOCCH(NH2)CH2Se(CH2)2CH(NH2)COOH) has been isolated from several types of plants. It was first discovered in the Astragalus plant by Horn and Jones . The selenium accumulators S. pinnata and Neptunia amplex-icaulis also biosynthesize selenocystathionine from selenite. In addition, this amino acid is the cytotoxic compound in monkey nut seeds ... [Pg.7]

This compound is the principal toxic component of seeds of Astragalus bisulcatus, in which it occurs together with the free selenium-containing amino acid (237). The toxicity of selenium-containing amino acids towards animals has been reviewed (208). [Pg.262]
