Although americium (VI) is rapidly reduced to americium (III) by chloride ion in aqueous solution, the insoluble red Cs2Am02Cl4 is readily obtained when the americium (V) chloro complex is treated with concentrated hydrochloric acid the mechanism of the reaction is not yet known, but it is not a result of disproportionation (25).
