Amalgam method

Oak Ridge National Laboratory analysis. By amalgamation method. [Pg.343]

Cinnamic acid may also be hydrogenated catalytically (p. 377). If the sodium amalgam method is chosen, the catalytic method should be practised with phenol. [Pg.234]

The Mahattan (city block) distance metric and Ward s amalgamation methods were used in (a) the Squared Euclidean distance and (b) complete linkage amalgamation methods. Note A, cv. Arbequina (6) C, cv. Coratina (6) K, cv. Koroneiki (6) P, cv. Picual (6) 1, harvest 1991 2, harvest 1992. Olives were harvested at three levels of maturity (unripe, normal, overripe) (source SEXIA Group-Instituto de la Grasa, Seville, Spain). The technological process for purifying brine is almost identical with both diaphragm and mercury cell methods of the manufacture of either sodium or potassium hydroxide. Therefore, it is sufficient to describe only the preparation of brine in the manufacture of sodium caustic by the amalgam method. [Pg.294]

Mercury di-o-tolyl may be j repared by the sodium amalgam method (see mercury diphenyl, Method 5). In this case 8 per cent, amalgam is used, and the yield is about 33 per cent. Tlie compound forms quadratic crystals from benzene, M.])t. 108° C. B.pt. 219 C. at 14 mm. The reactions of mercury di-o-tolyl with tlie trichlorides oi boron, phosphorus, and arsenic, also with nitrogen tri- and tetr-oxides, are similar to those described under mercury diphenyl (p. 74). [Pg.78]

Tlie production of mercury dibenzyl appears to have been a matter of considerable difliculty. Attempts to prepare it by the amalgam method failed, and the first successful preparation was made by use of Grignard s reaction. [Pg.79]

Mercury dicyclohexyl.—This compound proved more difficult to isolate than the phenyl derivative, but has been obtained by the action of mercuric bromide on a large excess of magnesium cyclohexyl bromide. It is much less stable than mercury diphenyl, decomposing even in a few hours to a black oil when kept over phosphorus pentoxide in the dark in a vacuum desiccator. Mercury dicyciohexyl forms white, hard granules, M.pt. 78° to 79° C., which are more soluble than mercury diphenyl, and combines directly with mercuric halides or cyanide in any solvent to form cyclohexylmercuric salts. It has also been prepared by the sodium amalgam method, when it is said to form white needles, M.pt. 189° C., -which can be sublimed in small quantities in vacuo ... [Pg.81]

Mercuri bis-p-phenetole separates as leaflets from benzene, M.pt. 185° C. It is obtained by the amalgam method. [Pg.143]

Examples of 1 and 3 have already been described above. Activation of magnesium by amalgamation or by alloying with copper or different transition metals has been reported, but these means of activation rarely offer advantages over other methods, and involve toxicity hazards and/or the risk of promoting side reactions. They are, therefore, not usually recommended, although the amalgamation method is occasionally useful. [Pg.54]

A few centuries later, with the discovery of the vast quantities of silver ore in Mexico and Peru (p. 109), the importance of Almaden grew enormously, for mercury was essential to the old Spanish amalgamation method of extracting silver. [Pg.217]

In comparison, bromobenzene, when heated with commercial nickel powder under the same reaction conditions for 80 h gave only 2.9% biphenyl (8) [77]. Activated cobalt powder, prepared by the Cheng s amalgam-method, behaves similarly to nickel powder and affected the homo-coupling of bromobenzene to biphenyl in 71% yield [77]. [Pg.72]
