Aluminum brass pitting corrosion

Evaporator tubes of aluminum brass, admiralty brass, copper, and 90/10 cupronickel were all almost completely resistant to corrosion and results with steel tubes were encouraging. The tubes were insulated electrically from the tube sheets in order to avoid galvanic action. Severe pitting occurred with aluminum tubes. [Pg.23]

When considering zinc-aluminum alloys, the surface oxide film normally present is likely to reduce any corrosion current. The risk of bimetallic corrosion is small in atmospheric exposure trials by Noranda have been in progress since 1984 on ZA alloys coupled to other common metals. No visual effects were noted at the 5-year examination (Barmhurst and Belisle, 1992). A zinc-25% aluminum-0.05% magnesium alloy coupled to other materials and exposed on the Noranda Research Center roof showed pitting attack on the zinc-based material (but only up to 0.38 mm deep in 10 years) when joined to copper, brass, or steel, but less when joined to stainless steel or lead and least when joined to aluminum. [Pg.71]

Water environments can also have a variety of compositions and corrosion characteristics. Freshwater normally contains dissolved oxygen as well as minerals, several of which account for hardness. Seawater contains approximately 3.5% salt (predominantly sodium chloride), as well as some minerals and organic matter. Seawater is generally more corrosive than freshwater, frequently producing pitting and crevice corrosion. Cast iron, steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and some stainless steels are generally suitable for freshwater use, whereas titanium, brass, some bronzes, copper-nickel alloys, and nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys are highly corrosion resistant in seawater. [Pg.707]
