Alum glue

It is used to control slime and to protect coating formulations, starch slurries, alum, glue, and other papermaking chemicals. 

The paper machine came into use around 1830. Before, paper had been sized in a separate operation with gelatine or glue. Now a new size was introduced, rosin and alum, which could be added to the beaten stock. The paper then came from the machine in the sized condition. The amount of alum required for sizing left the paper acid. This was the final blow to permanence. Acid paper does not last well it quickly turns brown and brittle. The life of paper which under good conditions could be 2000 years now was reduced to around 75 years. 

A curious analogy to the boiling to string proof of third molasses is found in the manufacture of chrome alum. It is well known that if molasses be boiled to a high temperature and allowed to cool taffy results, a vitreous noncrystalline mass. In like manner if in concentrating a solution of chrome alum, the evaporation passes a certain point, the mass on cooling assumes a glue-like consistency and refuses to crystallize. In such a case it is necessary to redissolve and reconcentrate carefully.
