Allen-Doisy test

Needles from EtOH.Aq. M.p. 139-40°. [a] -I- 148 5 in EtOH. Absorption band at 238 mp. No male hormone activity but gives positive Allen-Doisy test. 

The Allen-Doisy test was a biological test for E., in which the response of ovarectomized mice to urinary or plasma E. was observed. It was replaced in clinical practice by a colorimetrie test, the Korber method, in which the E. are treated with HjSOj and hydroqui-none to produce intensely fluorescing derivatives. However, the development of Immunoassays (see) for the steroid hormones has made the Korber method obsolete for routine clinical assays. 

Dilatation of cervix caused by relaxin yields same histological and chemical findings as in the case of uterus. The keratinization of vaginal epithelium in mice by estrogen (as examined by Allen-Doisy-Test) is potentiated by relaxin. Histological and chemical investigations were not carried out in this direction.
